I think you should start out with some very simple, easy-to-understand poetry, just to begin with. If you start out with the complicated stuff, you might be turned off and not want to read any more poetry.
I would suggest starting off with some poetry by Billy Collins, Charles Bukowski, or William Carlos Williams.
After you kind of get a feel for simple poetry, I would suggest moving on to more complicated, wordy poetry. For example, you could try reading some poetry by Anne Sexton, Michael Ondaatje, or Anne Michaels.
Really, if you’re a beginner to reading poetry, start out slow. Don’t dive in too deep or too fast. And start by reading for enjoyment. Don’t overanalyze or focus too hard on the details. Savor the poetry, not the mechanics. Make it a goal to read a few poems per week, until you get in the swing of things and progress to reading a larger number of poems, including more complex poems.
