How did you finally find your own voice, i.e. knowing your writing style?

I basically just experimented with different styles for a while. I would read through my favorite poets’ work and then try to imitate their styles to see if anything would stick. For example, I actually went through an e.e. cummings-like phrase when I was first starting out, and my poetry would be written in a very similar style to his.

But eventually I decide his style wasn’t for me, so I decided to imitate someone else’s.

Once I found a style I liked, I tried to blend it with another style and with my own elements and ideas so that it became something unique, something that was mine and not just an imitation of someone else’s style. :)
