Don’t feel dumb. When I first started out writing, I had no idea what some of those terms meant either, especially the difference between poetry and prose. And I had no idea what the heck “spilled ink” was supposed to mean! :)

Here’s my quick guide to the above terms:

Poetry: A form of literature using rhythm and enjambment, which means the poem is broken up into separate lines or grouped into chunks of lines called stanzas.

Prose: A form of language that uses natural flow of speech. It is not broken up into lines like poetry is, and it has an ordinary structure. Prose is what short stories are written in. It’s like writing down what you’re saying exactly the way you’re saying it. Just ordinary speech, written down.

Spilled Ink: A tag that many Tumblr writers attach to their prose pieces or poems in hopes that someone from the blog spilling-your-ink will find those writings in that tag and read them. It’s also a tag that some Tumblr writers use as a general tag to organize their writing or identify it as writing.

Creative Writing: Any form of writing that “thinks outside the box” or goes outside the norm.

I hope that helped! :)
