I would say my writing style is a mix of slam poetry, a bit of lyrical influences, and confessional free verse.
You wanted tips to write in that style-slam poetry has a lot of energy and force involved and is very hard-hitting. You have to use strong word choice and vivid metaphors, and your first and last lines should pack a punch. If you look up any spoken word poets on YouTube like Rudy Francisco or Buddy Wakefield, you’ll see what I mean.
As far as the lyrical influences, Anne Michaels might be a good idea to read the work of. Her pieces have beautiful word choice and language, and they’re very fluid.
As for the confessional free verse part of my style, sometimes you just have to write a poem confessing some secret part of yourself, and write it in whatever way or style you see best fit.
Overall, though, my best tips would be to look up some poetry slams on YouTube and try to get a feel for what those poets write and perform like, and go from there!
Good luck on your assignments. :)
