Hi! So I have a few questions I was hoping you would answer. How do you decide whether to write something from 1st person or 3rd person? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both styles? I was also wondering about how you decide to write something in the present or past tense. Thanks :) and btw your writings are soo meaningful and well written. They're beautiful and I love them all. :)

Hey. Normally I just write in first person, because there’s something more intimate and real about it for me. I rarely ever use third person unless I’m describing a relationship between a couple and I want the readers to observe the relationship from an outside point of view, if that makes any sense.

Advantages of first person pov include that sense of intimacy or truth; it also makes the reader feel closer to the writer, and is often the best point of view to use if you’re writing a poem about direct personal experience.

Disadvantages of first person pov: Many readers automatically assume that if a poem uses first person pov, then the events in the poem happened to the writer in real life. Not true. Writer and speaker are two entirely different people.

Advantages of third person pov include being able to write about relationships or characters from another perspective/ an outside perspective, and readers don’t assume that the writer has directly experienced the events contained in the poem.

Disadvantages of third person pov: The writing can feel less intimate or realistic, and many readers feel as if third person pov doesn’t give them a direct, personal connection to the writer.

If I’m writing about an event that contains a lot of action or intensity, I use present tense because it allows the reader to kind of “live within the moment” as they’re reading the poem.

If the event is sad or more calm, and I want to focus more on the emotions/reactions associated with that event instead of the actions, I use past tense.

Hope that answered your questions! And thank you. :)
