If he tries to draw black rings around your eyes with his fists
like he’s dressing Saturn, remember that if it were really love,
he would be complimenting the color of your eyes
instead of adding a darker shade.
And sometimes a glass bottle in a clenched fist
doesn’t have a ship hidden inside or a secret message
written on a scroll waiting to find its way out to sea.
Sometimes it’s just a weapon no matter how hard
you’d wish on the stars for it to be anything but.
And this life is far from predictable, but if he hits you once,
he will hit you again.
Remember, this life is a photograph that hasn’t developed all the way yet.
Some corners are still blurry, a little smudged or too dark,
and the colors are just starting to come into focus.
So do yourself a favor and remove yourself from the wrong picture
before you’re stuck inside the frame with someone who hurts you.
