“I wish so desperately that my parents wouldn’t control me anymore, she sighed. And the other girl responded, I know the feeling. But the truth is that, as children, we wound our parents so deeply just by existing. We wound them simply by being born and then by leaving to start a new family when we are older. Don’t you see? We leave them behind, like dried beetle husks lying abandoned in the dirt. It’s an endless cycle. So the next time you feel angry or hurt, when you feel that your parents have wronged you, remember that soon you will be out of their lives and they will be wishing you had stayed.”
