“Do you remember when Dad took us stargazing that one time when we were kids?
Yeah, I do. God, yeah. And he told us each star was a person’s soul.
Mmm. I believed him then, but I’m not sure if I still do.
You were just a kid, though. We both were. What were we then, five? Six?
Oh, maybe. But I just remember wondering how so many souls could fit in one little patch of sky. All those lives, burning like candles in the dark.
Or like fireflies.
Like fireflies.
But you know what kills me the most?
What’s that?
Knowing that if Dad were here today, we’d be doing the exact same thing, lying on our backs in the cold grass, staring up at that extraordinarily lonely universe.
I can almost picture it. It would be so beautiful.
Yeah, it would. All those tiny pinpricks of light.
No no, not the stars. I didn’t mean the stars.
What did you mean?
I meant seeing Dad again.
But you see him every day. Every day of your life.
Where?
Up there.”
