“Hey. I saw you in the library the other day and you looked so concentrated on your book, your head down, hair spilling over your shoulders, like you were so into it.
Oh, you’re the boy who was shelving books, right? Do you work there?
Yeah, I do. I love being at the library; the quiet atmosphere is such a welcome relief from everyday hectic life at school.
I agree. I go there as much as I can.
What were you reading?
I was reading If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor.
Really? You’ve heard of that book? No one else I know has! It’s such a beautiful book. All those tiny details, and I love how it happens over the span of a single day…
Me too! This is such an odd coincidence. I’m glad you like it, too. I think it’s an underappreciated book. It’s nice to finally meet someone else who appreciates it like I do.
Hey, do you think that maybe…you’d want to go to the bookstore down the street with me sometime and we could pick out books, maybe show each other our favorites?
You’re the first boy who’s ever asked me that. They always ask if I want to go out for coffee or see a band, but no one’s ever asked me if I wanted to go to the bookstore. So yes, a thousand times yes. I’d love to go with you.
Does Saturday at six work for you, then? Here, let me get your address, if that’s alright. I’ll pick you up.
I’ll write it down for you. Saturday at six works perfectly. I’ll see you then!
I guess it’s a date! See you there!”
