Sometimes people don’t love you like you were meant to be
because they don’t know how to love themselves.
Even jellyfish wish they could flip things around
and sting themselves for once.
You know, I have never seen a superhero
who didn’t have a heart waving a white cape
of surrender on the inside.
Maybe laughter is how vocal cords make love
and those smiles that struggle to pull themselves
up at the corners are just like those kids
who were too weak to hold on to the jungle gym bars
for more than twenty seconds on the playground.
Birthmarks are just skin’s way of marking
the treasure map inside
So believe me when I say that what’s on the outside
does matter sometimes after all.
Just because your message went to voicemail
doesn’t mean there isn’t someone on the other end
wishing they had the courage
to pick up the phone.
Sometimes your heart might feel as heavy
as a Mack truck, but that just means
there’s a lot of working beams holding it up
And when a man waits for you in a dark parking lot
know that you shouldn’t have to grab your keys
like a weapon to keep him away;
all that light inside of you
should have burned his eyes anyway-
forgiveness isn’t putting the weapon down
it’s learning how to kiss the other person
pulling back the trigger.
